The two major elements of Go

1. You build your own territory.
2. You capture enemy stones by surrounding them.

As you have seen, Go is a game in which you build territory.
However, there is another important rule.
It is: If you surround the opponent's stones, you can capture them.
The captured stones are kept as prisoners; at the end of the game you put them in your opponent's territory before counting it.

1. Building your own territory
Black has built 25 points of territory. White has built 24 points.

2. Capturing your opponent's stones
@@
If you surround the enemy's stone, you can capture it.

Trying to learn the two major elements of Go at the same time can be very confusing for someone learning Go for the first time. Here we just want you to understand the concept.

Go has an image of being a difficult game because these two elements combine, but actually they are the reason why it's such a profound and interesting game.

If Go was just surrounding territory, it would be boring.
Captured stones are prisoners.
